There are many things you can do to improve your computer health and security. One of the most important General-Maintenance steps is to backup your data! This is important, as your data can be lost to computer failure, human error, a virus, or even a fire. Computer infections are a common risk, regardless of you operating system! I have switched to Windows 7, because of its impoved security, but I still have a Windows XP computer running, because I use some older programs, and I use it for my computer repair shop purposes.
Some of the best ways to protect your computer, is to avoid risky behavior, such as playing with "Free Stuff", such as music downloads, "free screen savers", "free' programs, etc. The bad guys, want to infect your computer, for fun and profit, and they will try to trick you.
.
I personally avoid Facebook as much as I can, because of the problems others have, using it. I also delete cookies frequently, as there are many harmful cookies installed. Cookies are installed every time you use the web. Many are helpful, to improve your performance, or to assist the company in identifying you, but some of the tracking cookies are not in you best interest, and can be extremely dangerous, such as capturing your passwords, Social Security number, etc.
Routine maintenance, will speed up your computer, such as removing unneeded programs and data, and "defragging" your PC. A monthly cleanup is usually sufficient to keep your PC running well. Keeping you computer cool, will also extend you PC's life.
