My Toshiba laptop displays Password= prompt on startup

Is your Toshiba laptop asking for the BIOS password even though you didn’t set up the password? Most likely this is Toshiba’s fault.
Here’s very interesting information I found on Toshiba website. They posted this information in Support Bulletins.
The computer models listed above may display a “Password =” prompt when the computer is turned on, even though no power-on password has been set. If this happens, there is no password that will satisfy the password request. If the computer is turned off and back on again, it is very likely that the same password prompt will appear. The computer will be unusable until this problem is fixed.
If the problem has not happened yet, you can prevent it from happening in the future by upgrading the BIOS to the newest version.
The occurrence of this problem on any particular computer is unpredictable — it may never happen, but it could happen any time that the computer is turned on. If this problem does occur, it will be necessary to send the computer to a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider, who will fix the problem at no charge to you.
Did you see that? TOSHIBA WILL FIX THE PROBLEM AT NO CHARGE TO YOU.

Here’s a list of Toshiba laptops affected by this problem:

7 Tips to Prevent Motherboard Bad BIOS Flash - Bios Tips

BIOS is an important component of your computer, with out which your computer won’t run at all. Many motherboard manufacturer often issue BIOS updates to fix bugs, minor enhancements, support for newer processors (CPU) and RAM. Many people end screwing up their computer’s motherboard because they don’t take proper precautions when flashing their motherboard’s BIOS. Remember most motherboard manufacturers do not offer warranty for bad flash.

7 Tips to Prevent Motherboard Bad BIOS Flash
Below 7 Tips to prevent Motherboard bad BIOS flash :

1. Check your Power Supply before you start flashing: The most common cause for screwed up BIOS is power failure during the flashing process. Before you start flashing make sure to connect your computer to a UPS. In event of power failure the UPS would be able to provide power to your computer.

2. If you use UPS make sure that its battery has got enough juice: If the battery of your UPS does not have enough charge, then your computer would go down when there is a power failure or surge. I suggest you plan your BIOS flashing process in advance; you can check your UPS’s battery by putting in battery mode. By doing this you would also come to know how long your UPS would last in event of a power failure. Also make sure you charge your UPS properly so that the battery charge is full when start flashing you motherboard.

3. Correctly identify your motherboard model and current BIOS version: To flash your motherboards BIOS you require the correct BIOS flash file, if you flash your motherboard with wrong BIOS then your motherboard is dead. Though you can identify the your motherboard model using software utilities but I usually do not rely on them. I open up the computers cabinet and find out the motherboard model from there, remember your motherboard model number is always printed on your motherboard. Once you know the motherboard model can head to your manufacturers website and download the latest BIOS update. All of today’s modern BIOS flash utility that manufacturers provide have inbuilt mechanism that prevents you from flashing the wrong BIOS version. This is for people who flash in DOS mode.

4. Close unnecessary programs when you flash within Windows: As you all know sometimes Windows may behave strangely or become unstable so to avoid all this, you better close all programs. My sincere advise would be avoid flashing from within Windows, instead flash from a USB Flash drive in DOS mode.

5. When flashing in DOS mode prefer USB flash drive instead of a Floppy: A floppy disk is very sensitive to environment when compared to a USB flash drive and can get corrupted very soon. So I would suggest you to use USB flash drive instead of a floppy disk.

6. Scan your USB flash disk or Floppy disk for errors or bad sectors before flashing: If your USB flash disk or floppy disk has bad sectors then the BIOS file would get corrupted and probably you would end up with a bad flash. So scanning your USB flash disk or floppy disk makes lot of sense.

7. Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully before flashing: Each manufacturer provides various ways of flashing your BIOS so before flashing read the instructions for the method that you plan to use carefully and proceed further.

BLOCK DIAGRAM OF CRT MONITOR

Light color image: a color picture signal components and integrated into a video image by scanning principle, with three monochrome images are generated on the color picture tube through which the principles of color mixing color image synthesis is displayed with full color.

Block power supply: power supply block of Monitor operating under the principle of pulse sources or switching, the input voltage is applied can vary quite widely from 150V AC to 250V AC, output voltage typically provide 5 types of power fixed DC voltage to provide for other blocks in the machine.

* Volume scanning lines: A block is responsible for creating the high voltage supply for the light work around the same time it provides flow control horizontal scrolling driver to drive electron beam scans the screen horizontally.

*Block raster: raster block's mission is to provide the pulse frame for the roll.Drive along to stretch the screen vertically.

* Block amplification Video: Video signals from Card to put in three lines R, G, B is very weak amplitude of about 0.2 V are two-story video amplifier amplifies the signal strong enough to approximately 40V amplitude before to control the emission current from cathode.
 * Block Processor (CPU) is a control block is responsible for sharp changes in frequency, change the screen size, change brightness, contrast and creates on-screen display.

SMPS Troubleshooting tips

Failure phenomenon, no output measured and found to plug 9 feet No +5 vsb voltage, so you can not judge the work of auxiliary power.
Ic3 l7805 three-terminal regulator measuring inputs and outputs were not voltage, but sometimes there is 20v input voltage, output has 5v voltage, then short the normal voltage output pin 13-14, but then again, the short cable disconnect pass the time nor the output voltage. Auxiliary power collector voltage measurement from the multimeter instructions have been found from vibration, it was suspected that a fault in the transformer secondary winding side。 Replacement capacitor c04, disconnect l7805 input, still no voltage secondary winding, again in accordance with the power failure did not come from the vibration of the end winding from the initial search fails, found that when the switch with a multimeter measuring the collector, the voltage times be back to normal and the enhanced effect by vibration is not to find fault confidence.
Survey found that r02 has become infinite resistance, the role of this resistance is filtered rectified mains voltage into the base switch is open power from the vibration produced a prerequisite, with a 390k resistor to replace r02, troubleshooting .
IC Application Circuit Diagrams way radio equipment, integrated circuits, more and more applications, knowledge of the IC application circuit is a circuit diagram of a key, is one of the difficulties.
1. IC application circuit Application circuit function has the following features:
① It expresses the integrated circuit structure outside the pins, components and other parameters, so that the work of a complete integrated circuit.
② Some IC application circuit, draw a block diagram of the circuit within the integrated circuit, this time on the analysis of IC application circuit is very convenient, but that means little.
③ IC application circuit is a typical application circuit and functional circuit of the former manual can be found in integrated circuits, which appear in the practical circuit, these two little difference between the application circuit, according to this characteristic, in the absence of actual Typical application circuit Application circuit can be used for reference, this method is often used in repair.
④ general expression of IC application circuit unit, a complete circuit, or a circuit system, but in some cases a complete circuit to use two or more integrated circuits.
2. Characteristics of IC application circuit IC application circuit has the following features:
① most of the application circuit does not draw within the circuit block diagram, which is detrimental to knowledge map, especially for beginners to more unfavorable circuit analysis.
② For starters, the application of integrated circuit than the circuit of discrete components is more difficult, which is the internal circuitry of IC do not know the original edge, in fact, in map Ye Hao, repair Ye Hao, integrated circuits more convenient discrete circuit components.
③ on the IC application circuit, the general understanding of the internal circuits and integrated circuits Learn more about the role of the lead case, the knowledge map is more convenient. This is because the circuit has the same type of regularity in their common master, you can easily analyze many different types of integrated circuits with feature application circuit.
3. IC Application Circuit Diagrams methods and attention of IC methods and precautions are mainly the following points:
(1) to understand the role of each pin is the key to understand the knowledge map the role of pin IC application can access the manual。 Know the role of each pin, the analysis of the external circuit pin role of the working principle and components convenience. For example: know the pin is an input pin ①, foot and then the series is the input coupling capacitor circuit, and the circuit is connected to pin ① input circuit.
(2) to understand the role of integrated circuit the pins are three ways to understand the role of IC pins, there are three different ways: First, access to such information; 2 is based on the internal circuit block diagram of integrated circuits; 3 is based on the application of integrated circuit outside of each pin of the circuit characteristics. On the third approach requires a relatively good basis for circuit analysis.
(3) integrated circuit analysis step of the application circuit as follows:
① DC circuit analysis. This step is mainly for power and ground pins outside the circuit. Note: there are multiple power supply pins when the power to distinguish between these, such as whether the former level, after the power supply circuit of pins, or the left and right channel power supply pin; on a number of ground This pin must distinguish. Distinguish between multiple power pins and ground pins on the repair is useful.
② Analysis of signal transmission. This step analyzes the signal input pin and output pin external circuit. When the IC has multiple input and output pins, we should be clear after the previous level, or circuit of output pins; for two-channel circuit also distinguish between left and right channel input and output pins.
③ other pins of the external circuit. For example, to find negative feedback pin, pin, etc. of vibration, this step of the analysis is the most difficult, on the beginner to the role of information by means of pins or internal circuit block diagram.
④ have a certain ability in knowledge map, learn to summarize various features of integrated circuit pin external circuit law, and to master the rules, which enhance the speed of knowledge map is useful.。 For example, the input pins outside the law of the circuit is: through a coupling capacitor or a coupling circuit with the output stage circuit is connected; output pins outside the law of the circuit is: through a coupling circuit and the circuit after the input stage is connected.
⑤ analysis of integrated circuits within the circuit of the signal amplification process, the best access to the internal circuit block diagram of the integrated circuit. Within a block diagram of the circuit when the signal transmission lines through the arrows to know which circuit after the signal amplification or processing, the final signal output from which pin.
⑥ understand some of the key integrated circuit test points, pin DC voltage law on the maintenance of the circuit is very useful.0v。 otl circuit DC voltage output DC voltage equal to half of IC; ocl circuit DC output voltage is equal to 0v; btl circuit DC output voltage of the two are equal, when a single power supply voltage is equal to half the DC, dual power When power is equal to 0v. When the two pins of the IC indirectly resistance, the resistance will affect the two pin on the DC voltage; When the two pins of the coil indirectly, the two pin DC voltage is equal, Unequal coil will be open up; when two pins of a capacitor or indirectly connected rc series circuit, the two pins of the DC voltage is certainly not equal, if the same breakdown shows that the capacitor has been.
⑦ generally not to analyze the integrated circuit within the circuit works, it is quite complex.
1. Blown fuse fault analysis and for this failure, the first turn on the power case, inspection of the fuse blown power supply, whereby the inverter circuit can determine whether the initial failure occurred. c5、c6,ql、q2, If so, the following three conditions are not caused by external: input circuit is a bridge rectifier diode breakdown; high-pressure filter electrolytic capacitor c5, c6 are breakdown; inverter power switch ql, q2 damage.
The main reason is because the DC filter and transform oscillator circuit to work long hours in high pressure (10 300v), high current state, especially because of large changes in AC voltage output when the load heavy, prone to blown fuse fault.。 DC filter circuit consists of four rectifier diodes, two 100kω about limiting resistor and two electrolytic capacitor 330uf about the composition; transform oscillation circuit is mainly installed in the same heat sink on the same two models of high-power switch tube.
AC fuse blows, disconnect the power plug off, the first circuit board carefully observed the appearance of the high-voltage components have been burnt or breakdown traces of electrolyte overflow。 Without exception, with a multimeter measuring the value of the input: If less than 2ookω, shows a partial short circuit back then were measured at two high-power switch e, c resistance among most; if less than 100kω, it indicates switch tube has been damaged, measuring four rectifier diodes are reverse current limiting resistor and the resistance of two, with a multimeter to measure the charge and discharge conditions to determine whether it is normal.。 Also when replacing the switch, if you can not find the same models to choose alternative products, we should pay attention to the collector - emitter reverse breakdown voltage vceo, the maximum allowable collector power dissipation pcm, the collector - base hit reverse through voltage vcbo parameter should be greater than or equal to the original transistor parameters.。 Another to note is that: a component must not be damaged in the identified, direct boot after change, so may still have trouble due to other high voltage components, in turn replace the damaged components.。 Must be on the circuit conduct a comprehensive inspection of all high voltage components measured, the failure to completely rule out the fuse blows.
2. No DC voltage output or voltage output instability if the fuse was intact, in a load case, no output DC voltage levels, the possible reasons are: power appears open, short circuit; over-voltage, over-current protection circuit failure; oscillation circuit did not work; power supply overload; high frequency rectifier diode rectifier filter circuit, the breakdown; filter capacitor leakage, etc..
Processing methods; with a multimeter measuring system board 10 5v power supply to ground resistance, if more than 0.8ω, it indicates the system board without short circuit. The computer configuration to minimize the machine, leaving only the motherboard, power supply, buzzer, measuring the output DC voltage, if still no output, indicating a fault in the computer power supply control circuit。 Controlled mainly by the integrated circuit switching power supply controller (tl-496, gs3424, etc.) and over-voltage protection circuit, the control circuit is working properly is directly related to whether the output DC voltage. Over-voltage protection circuit composed of small-power transistor, or silicon and related components, whether used multimeter measuring the breakdown of the transistor (SCR Zexu welding if measured), the related resistors and capacitors for damage.
3.Power supply output, but no show boot failure may occur due to power good signal input of the reset delay time is not enough, or no power good output.
When turned on, with the voltage meter measured the output power good (then host of a pin power plug), if no +5 v output, then check the delay components; if +5 v output, then change the delay capacitor delay circuit can.
4 Poor power supply load with only the motherboard, floppy drive power when working, when connected to the hard drive, optical drive, or plug in memory, the screen changes from and does not work. The possible reasons are: the transistor operating point is not a good choice, high-voltage filter capacitor leakage or damage, leakage heat regulator diode, rectifier diode failures.
The exchange oscillation circuit transistors to increase the gain, or transfer large transistor operating point. Detected a problem with a multimeter components, the replacement of silicon, zener diodes, high voltage filter capacitor or rectifier diode can be.
1-Today, a Big Dipper repaired power, failure to start the board can not, short access test points, power supply fan will be transferred, amount of voltage output of each group completely normal, but listen to say a word internally, apart found that the filter capacitor 12v bubbling, replacement after work.
2。Recently, repair a colorful (umax) power supply, this is the case, the fault is not power, turn on the power enclosure and found broken glass fuse has instructions within the current large, there is short-circuit point, when I opened the bottom found a small cockroach stick died in boards, and the power of the steel substrate has burned black, the circuit board with melt point circuit board, the first volume of a few power management, good, take a closer, a small cockroach just died in the power supply filter capacitor The 300v both ends, with anhydrous alcohol to clean the circuit board, the measured power input part of the rectifier diodes, four on bad. This is not easy to find the same type of rectifier diodes (this stuff used must be of the same model, or soon will be bad), then a rectifier bridge to find a replacement as usual.
3, lenovo original ps-400atx power, boot no reaction, test +5 vsb is 6.7v, pwon to 3.4v, but the insurance and switch to normal observation center to promote the transformer primary winding circuit of a resistor r11 burned black, the resistance of the Deputy Power Supply +13.8 v supply for the two to promote the transistor c9015 limiting resistor, check similar circuit, the replacement for the 1.5k resistor tl494 color, measuring +5 v reference output 8.4v, the bad block replacement. +5vsb+5 Vsb filter capacitor (16v, 470uf) muster, replacement. Vice-power opt coupler in the secondary output current limiting resistor r33 (2.7k) circuit, replace the normal power. Analysis of failure causes for the resistance r33 higher open circuit voltage caused by the Deputy damage caused by a string device.

Hard Disk Troubleshooting And trouble tips

One day you wake the computer up and not see the familiar Windows logo appears, instead, the screen went blank, a warning appears several "cryptic" or some "beep beep ..". Be calm. Some start up problems are overcome by the simple solution to ... unexpected.

1. Do not worry: blank screen or a problem in the boot process is not always due to corrupted hard drive. Hard disk is now often longer than other parts of the PC, as well as running the system utilities are not needed and reinstall or replace hardware.

2. Reboot: Turn off computer, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on. This movement will adjust the computer - and usually that is enough to solve this problem.

3. Check out: If the screen remains blank, check all electrical wire, cables, and connectors to ensure that they are not loose. Check the surge protector device, ensuring its fuse has not yet broken or damaged. At the same time, to check the contrast knob and watching the screen brightness has been turned down low no.

4. Listen to noises: When you boot your PC to listen to the fans run at power supplies. You must also hear the disk spin. If all were silent, the power supply can be broken or a loose electrical junction. Open the lid of the machine and check the box to make sure all cables are securely fixed. Remember to always wear antistatic or static measures body before touching any parts inside a PC. If you hear a series of beeps before your system crashes, you have to remember the number of beeps and then short or long hours. Error sound is generated from the system BIOS and tell you about a problem was detected. Find the computer manufacturer to determine the error message that means nothing in particular.

5. Find the clues: When you boot your PC running Power-On Self Test (Check when opening the phone) to confirm the presence of the major hardware components such as memory chips, video cards and drives. Observe the error message appears on the screen. You can also read confirmation or error messages when booting the system more advanced devices such as CD-ROM drive. However, do not always need to report them. If the system crashes while configuring a peripheral device, then it is likely the culprit.

If your system to boot Windows, then at least a portion of your disk still works. Windows 95 and 98 still use the DOS autoexec.bat and config.sys files to load drivers for some older hardware parts. If your PC crashes while loading this driver, please press after seeing Starting Windows 9x. This movement allows you to run that file every time a line to see what went wrong when loading device.

- If you see an error message Boot disk failure Operating system not found, or rather informed Starting Windows 9x, then your PC can not load Windows from the hard disk. Could have severely damaged hard drive.

6. Boot from the floppy. This process will bypass the hard drive and used to confirm your computer is normal. Use a Windows boot disk with your machine (if not the boot disk is best to create such a disk.) Here's how: Put it into the floppy drive, click Add / Remove Programs in Control Panel, select Startup Disk and click Create Disk. Reboot the system with the boot disk in the floppy drive. If successful the system boots and displays the prompt A: \> which means your PC is working well. Try accessing your hard disk by typing C: and press. If you see the prompt C: \>, then convert the folder and try to copy a small file to a floppy.

If successful, you can write to the disk, and disk might still be some life in it (sometimes the hard disk slowly dying). Take the opportunity to backup important files, then run a disk diagnostic utility such as ScanDisk or Norton Disk Doctor.

7. Check your CMOS settings. If the error message Dirve C: not found (or roughly so), your computer may not recognize the hard drive because it lost all its CMOS settings. This happens when the CMOS battery or broken. To fix this, the CMOS setup program: While the PC is booting, or, or press any key or by PC makers provisions (see document attached to computer technology). If no hard disk listed, you must enter the settings of this drive. You can declare parameters by hand (these parameters are usually printed on the hard drive casing), but most of the PC will re-enter them for you by automatically add-on hard drive configuration program CMOS installation.

TROUBLE SHOOTING NETWORKS

NETWORK TYPES

PEER-TO-PEER
CLIENT SERVER
TERMINALS

PEER-TO-PEER:
Peer-to-peer is a network where there is no cauterized server to share resources or common administration of users and resources. This network can be setup between two computers by a cross-over cable (CAT) and RJ-45 jack or between more then two computers through a network hub/switch using straight through cable. Primary requirement is that the computer should have a network card installed and commonly used protocol is TCP/IP. In cross-over cabling the 8 color coded wires at both the ends A & B are crimped into the RJ-45 jack in the following pattern: end A - 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and end B - 3,6,1,4,5,2,7,8. As 1-3, 2-6, cross-over 4,5,7,8 are straight through. Give each color a number and you will get it correct. The computers share resources, such as files and printers, each computer is responsible for its own security, each computer acts as both a client and server.

COLOR CODE STANDARDS: The Transmitter (TX) pins are connected to corresponding Receiver (RX) pins. Plus is connected to plus and minus is connected to minus.

CLIENT SERVER:
A server based network includes a group of computers called clients. These clients request and receive network services from specialized more powerful computers called servers. Servers are higher performance systems providing network services to other computers. Some common server types include file servers, terminal servers, print servers, proxy servers, mail servers and application servers. In a server based network, resources are located on a server or group of servers. Server are also used to authenticate user accounts at login and put restriction on accessing resources.

TERMINALS:
Terminals are computers that do not have operating system installed or any storage space in them. The are fully reliable on the Terminal server for applications and resources. They have a boot ROM chip on the system board which helps it to connect to the terminal server over the network. Once it is connected to the server it utilizes the application and resources on the server.

NETWORK MEDIA

NETWORK ADAPTER CARD
TWISTED PAIR CABLE
SWITCH / HUB
REPEATER
BRIDGE
GATEWAY
NETWORK ADAPTER CARD:

The network adapter is a PCI card which connects the computer to the cable for transmitting data. In recent motherboards this is built-in.
TWISTED PAIR CABLE:

Commonly used cable in LAN networks. Before twisted pair, coaxial was used but had limitation in speed and connectivity. Twisted pair comes in shielded (STP) and unshielded (UTP) and also has grade/category. Presently most networks run using Category 5 (CAT-5) cable with a speed of 100 Mbps. With more advancing of technology CAT-6 is available with a speed of 1000 Mbps. The network adapter card, switch etc. used in the network for 1000 Mbps should also support or be of the same standard or speed.

SWITCH / HUB:

Provides a attachment point for network cabling. Earlier Hubs were used, which had some limitations, now Switch are used as they are more advance then the Hub.

REPEATER:

Repeater renews a signal and is used to enlarge the network beyond cabling limitations.

BRIDGE:

Used to connect two networks. Bridge knows on which side a node is located. A bridge passes only packets addressed to computers across the bridge, reducing the load on the transmission medium.

GATEWAY:

Gateway is a point on a network, which can be a computer or router, which acts as a point of exit for data on it's network.

TROUBLE SHOOTING NETWORKS

If the network cable connected to the network card of your PC is completely unplugged or disconnected, it will appear on your Network Connections window. But if the cable is damaged or partially removed may not appear as unplugged or disconnected. Check the lights on the network adapter or port on your PC. If this seems ok then check the light on the port of the Switch to which your PC’s network cable is connected. Try reseating it or changing the port. If you are convinced that your hardware is working fine, then you can try looking into the network configuration. Click Start, Run, type cmd, you will get the command prompt window, type ipconfig and hit the Enter key, this will display your IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway. If you require the configuration in detail then type ipconfig /all and it will display your IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS and DHCP. Looking at these you will know if your system is having the correct configuration or is some entry wrong or missing. If you do not assign your system IP address it automatically assigns from 169.254.__.__. If you have assigned and still it uses the automatically assigned IP address then the system has problem connecting to the network. Another tool that you can use is PING. In the command prompt type ping leave a space and then the IP address of another system if you receive reply then your computer is able to connect, if you receive “request timed out” means it is unable to connect.

TROUBLE SHOOTING TIPS:

1.      Check logs in the event viewer to see if there is any event that can be of assistance to you to find out which device or driver is causing trouble.
2.      Check the BIOS settings to see if the devices are enabled.
3.      Check if the power cables are properly connected and switched on.
4.      Does the problem occurs during the execution of any particular program.
5.      Is the problem related to any device or application?
6.      During what conditions does it occur?
7.      Has it occurred in the past, if yes then what measures were adapted?
8.      Which software was recently installed and did it work correctly in the past.
9.      Which hardware was recently installed and did it work correctly in the past.
10.  Do these Software/Hardware work fine on other systems.
