Google Unveils +1(Facebook) Button For Third Party Websites

After unveiling the +1 button in March, Google has started rolling out the button for third party websites. Google previewed this button, which works like the Facebook Like button, at the Google I/O conference and confirmed that this button will be launched within this week.

The +1 buttons will be in different sizes - Small, Medium, Standard and Tall, with and without the +1 counter, and websites can tie the buttons into their own site logon systems to know which pages are accessed more by users, to keep a record of this. After sufficient number of people have the +1 page on their website, users can view different data such as age and sex of people who recommend those particular pages. This can be done using Google s Analytics system.

Is Google stepping up its social networking strategy? Yes, it is doing it steadily and surely. They tried it with Buzz, not long ago, and it didn t quite succeed. Now they are trying other ways to step up to Facebook in Facebook s backyard. Will they succeed? Only time will tell.

All Mac OS X platform users can download the Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1 from here.

Microsoft Windows Releases Tool To Migrate iOS Apps to WP7

Microsoft has been a late entrant to the mobile apps scene and its Windows Marketplace catering to Windows Phone 7 devices has therefore unsurprisingly got just over 10,000 apps as of now. This is nowhere near what application stores of Apple or Google Android or even Samsung have to offer. In an effort to increase the number of apps for WP7 devices and to turn the tide in its favor, Microsoft has launched a new tool.

The tool known as iOS to Windows Phone 7 API mapping tool, helps developers to port their iOS apps over to Windows Phone 7 platform. Developers can use the toolkit provided at this website to quickly migrate short blobs of iOS code to the equivalent C# code. This essentially means that the developer would not have to work from scratch to write the WP7 app, he/she has already written for iOS, thus saving a lot of headache. Microsoft plans to add more languages, and Android will surely be one of them.

Whurley, Chief Technology Officer from Chaotic Moon, shares their experience from developing on other phone platforms and talk through their Windows Phone 7 story.

Google Unveils Chromebook Laptop

Two years after the announcement, Google has finally unveiled a couple of Netbooks running on Chrome OS, known as Chromebook. The Chrome OS is a cloud-based Operating System, which means that all the data will be stored online on a remote server, rather than on a local hard drive. Google claims that this will help users get their work done instantly as their server would process the data faster than the processor onboard any Netbook. The OS will update itself automatically when you turn it on. And since the entire user experience is built around a browser, it boasts of an impressive boot-time of just 8 seconds.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin said "The complexity of managing computers is torturing users, and is a flawed model. Chromebooks are a new model which doesn't put the burden of management on yourself". That's a nice thought. On the official Chromebook page, Google has written off the use of Anti-virus. They have also promised that the users will be ensured of the 'latest' and 'greatest' version of the OS, as the OS automatically updates itself without an update prompt.

Silicon & Metal for the 'Chrome':

Samsung and Acer are going to be the first ones to hop on the Chrome OS bandwagon. In general, the Chromebook follows the suit of Notebooks with 11-inch screen. The onboard processor is an Intel Dual Core Atom, coupled with 2 GB RAM. Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n is going to be a standard for all Chromebooks. Variants with 3G module would also be available. Chromebook would usually sport 2 USB 2.0 ports and a memory card reader. Unlike the Samsung s line up, Acer will have a Chromebook with HD-out feature.  Both companies will be releasing two or more variants with minor differences.
The least expensive Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is set to cost US$429, while the Acer Chromebook would cost US$349 for the Wi-Fi version. The 3G version would be slightly dearer.

On a Cloud No. 9:

Price seems to be pretty fair considering the hardware involved. Both the manufacturers are offering a Dual Core Atom processor and 2GB RAM, which would be more than enough to run the Chrome OS. But at the back of our minds, a question lurks. Why get stuck in a browser, if the device actually has some decent specs?
Chromebook will boot in just 8 seconds, which is amazing; but what next? We'd be forced to stick to a browser for hours. Is it not worth to wait 15 to 20 seconds for Windows 7 to boot on Netbooks and have the flexibility to work with any application? Microsoft came under heavy fire for taking advantage of its Windows operating system to promote Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer, even though you can download any browser using the IE. Now how about sticking to the Chrome browser for the entire life cycle of your Netbook! That's really not a good Idea. People often criticize 'Apple' for crippling their devices off the features and for controlling the third party applications to generate more and more revenue. If that is bad, then have a look at Google's business model. They have outdone Apple in terms of crippling the usability. Google wants you to buy a Netbook with nothing but a Chrome Browser onboard. All the applications you'd run would be within the browser; all your family photos and videos would be directly saved on Google's server, multitasking is out of question (yes, there will be a new tab but that doesn't count as multitasking), and it will update automatically without giving you the option to decide whether or not you wish to download and apply the update.

Interestingly, Google is trying to get leads from enterprise users. Here we strongly believe that the IT department of any company would feel uneasy in keeping all the data on Google's cloud. Even a normal user may find worrisome, the prospect of seeing personal photographs getting listed in Google search. While we don't claim that Google would actually do that, but there has been a general loss of trust in Google after the Wi-Fi information theft scene in the U.K. And even if we trust Google unconditionally, do we really know how safe will be the safe? We have just witnessed Sony's online service getting hacked into.

Not allowing the installation of any standalone software means that companies who need their employees to use business specific applications, would have to rethink their plans of bulk purchasing the Chromebook. And at the price tag of US$400, they can simply get another Netbook with full-fledged Windows 7 and install their preferred software on it. Nevertheless, despite these shortfalls, the device might still be a hit, knowing the Google's huge user-base.

Pre-orders will start from 15th of May and it will be clear by June as to whether or not the Chromebook is successful. So with the Google's 'Cloud' gathering, let's see if it rains in June.

Microsoft Turnover of 16.43 billion from Windows

By the first quarter of 2011 behind us, the technology companies announce their financial results relating to profits and sales. And so, after seeing the results of Apple and  HTC , Let’s go now to Redmond, where Microsoft announced an increase in its net profit by 31%, amounting to 5.23 billion dollars, while sales increased by 13%, then taking a share 16.43 billion dollars.
These results are commendable, I must say, however, Apple – down from his record turnover of 24.67 billion dollars well – did better than the Colossus of Redmond, confirming that the technology sector is currently the most profitable mobile devices (iPhone and iPad to speak, not to mention the Android) and not those of bulky PC.
From this point of view, in fact, the financial results released by the Microsoft show that the total turnover of the operating system Windows has fallen by 4% which, moreover, may just surprise, considering the 40% drop that the netbook market in the United States has in recent months.
Well, Microsoft still manages to raise its voice because of the success of the Xbox console, controller and related products Kinect dedicated to the entertainment market, while equally well does the Office 2010 for the business market. If you do not want to give way to its competitors, the Redmond company will then invest more resources in the wider consumer market

LG 42LE4600 Jazz LED TV Review

Good picture quality but slightly expensive

Good color reproduction, DivX HD support, IPS panel, no backlight bleeding, highs and mids are loud and crisp, good design and build, easy to use menu

Cannot handle lower frequencies well causing slight distortion, remote could have been more ergonomic, a bit pricey

Expert Rating :

When LG first introduced the Jazz series LCD TV, it was clearly the best sounding LCD TV we had come across by miles. Although the sliding speakers were a bit gimmicky it was able to deliver the goods. Then later LG tried to rekindle the Jazz series with the Jazz Theater which boasted of nine speakers scattered across the rear. Amazingly, it sounded better than the older Jazz, the bass was a lot more pronounced and the highs and mids were clear with enough volume to easily fill a large hall in your home. It looked the part as well with cool LED lights on either sides of the TV.

Today, with all the LED hype that's around, first time buyers generally won't look at anything that's non-LED and in a way that's a smart thing too since the advantages of LED are pretty clear. The only way for LG to spruce new life into their older models is to infuse them with the LED tag and that's exactly what they've done to the Jazz. Today we have the 42LE4600 which is a 42-incher LED version of the Jazz series.

Design and Build

The exterior has gone through a makeover once again and this time LG has gone with a more contemporary design unlike the in-your-face look of the Jazz Theatre. This is not a bad thing, as the new design looks equally good with a glossy black bezel and red bit at the bottom. The backlighting is Edge LED and the panel is an IPS type, which means very good colors and viewing angles. The panel has a matt finish and isn't protected by any glass covering. The speakers are placed at the bottom of the TV and face downward, so they use the surface to disperse sound more evenly. Other features include 100Hz refresh rate, DivX HD Plus through USB and four speakers (10W RMS x2, 13W RMS x 2) plus a sub woofer hidden in the stand.

A good set of connectors fill the rear of the TV. There are plenty of HDMI and other analogue connections for all your devices. There is no LAN port, which means no DLNA or internet apps.

The woofer is placed in a stand with vents facing the sides and the rear. The silver bit in the front is just decorative and is not a vent. The Jazz Theater had two woofers facing the wall in the rear of the TV which gave it the extra punch. Let's see how this arrangement favors the Jazz LED.
erformance

Regular cable TV is watchable provided you sit at a good distance. The LE4600 is able to produce very good colors and has good brightness levels. The menu system makes it very easy to adjust the picture to suit your liking. The noise reduction feature helps a little as well but we've seen better. There is no ghosting or trailing issues over here, action sequences are rendered well. The edge enhancement is best turned off, as it causes a lot of aliasing in the picture. TruMotion works but not as well as Samsung's implementation of it. Overall the picture quality is good but not as great as LG's higher end models.

The buttons on the TV are placed on the rear with the labels placed in the front. The remote has well spaced buttons that are large and easy to operate. We feel it's a bit too long though and if you hold it in the center you can't reach the USB controls at the bottom. If you grip it further down then the volume controls are out of reach. LG has added a new option on the remote and called it 'Cricket', which essentially changes the video and sound mode together. This is nothing but the 'Sport' just renamed for Indian audiences.

USB Playback

The USB port supports NTFS hard drives so large portable storage is not a problem. We plugged in our 500GB Seagate GoFlex and set to work. The music player lets you select basic playback modes like Shuffle and Repeat. You can also change the sound mode here. 1080p video playback is a breeze as well, MKV, AVI, MOV, etc all playback perfectly well without any glitch. Black levels are good without any noticeable bleeding.

Sound quality is mixed bag

The Jazz Theatre set a sort of benchmark for TV speakers and this LED version had some big shoes to fill. The overall sound is loud and clear and certainly a notch above most LED TVs in the market. I still feel the Jazz Theatre had better definition to the sound and it could handle almost any music without buckling. The Jazz LED wasn't able to handle the deep bass and varying sounds in Tron Legacy. In 'Cinema' sound mode, the sound gets garbled during action sequences. Switching to 'Standard' mode helps a little but if you listen closely, you can still hear the slight distortion. The satellites are otherwise very clear, reproducing rich vocals and mids, it's the lower end that takes a beating.

Pricing and Verdict

LG has priced the Jazz LED 42LE4600 at an MRP of Rs. 83,990 while the street price should be closer to Rs. 77,000. We feel this is still a bit expensive and needs to drop to around 55-60K for it to be considered a good buy. The LE4600 is a very good TV as far as picture quality is concerned. The lack of the glass covering on the panel makes the colors pop a little less, but it's not a deal breaker by any means.

DivX HD playback is certainly a big feather in LG's hat and we are glad to see that feature being implemented in their lower end TVs as well. Finally coming to the sound, which is the whole showcase of the Jazz series, it's certainly better than most TVs in the market but sadly is not as great as their earlier Jazz Theatre series.

The sound is loud and clear for the most part but there is some amount of noticeable distortion when there is a heavy use of lower frequencies. With its current pricing, it's a bit on the expensive side considering it doesn't have any DLNA feature. It would be a good buy for around 55-60K.

Dell Inspiron Mini 10 New (1012) Review

Dell tries to perfect the netbook formula with their new iteration of the Mini

Cool design and variety of colored tops available, very good battery life, easily workable keyboard and touch-pad, compact charger, well priced, 3 configurations to choose from

Gets heated at the bottom under intensive use, HDMI port, which was available in the earlier model, has been removed

Expert Rating :
Rating
Following the launch of Intel's Pine Trail range of Atom processors, every manufacturer seems to be busy with refreshed versions of their respective netbooks. Today we have for review Dell's Inspiron Mini 10. While some makers, like Asus, have made nominal changes to the exterior, the Mini 10 has gone through a complete makeover since its last iteration. This earlier model was appreciated for having an HDMI port on-board, but trashed for a paltry 3-cell battery that was packaged along with it. Dell has tried to perfect their netbook formula with this model. Let's find out if they have succeeded in doing so.

Design and Build

The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 looks nothing like its predecessor. But like earlier models, this one too is available in a good variety of colored tops. The base is white for most models. The netbook looks pretty cool and unique; unique because of the way the screen hinge rests on the bottom half and not at the edge, unlike most laptops. The build feels plasticky, but is fairly sturdy nonetheless. At 1.37 kilos, it is fairly lightweight and in line with most netbooks today (that also weigh under 1.5 kg).The resistance offered by the hinges of the lid isn't that great, but thanks to the placement, the screen doesn't stretch back all the way. So, even if the hinge resistance wears off, say after long use, it wouldn't be a big issue to continue using the netbook.

On the inside we have a typical 10-inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display. It's quite bright and displays content with good clarity. A higher resolution (1366 x 768 pixel) display is also available in the higher priced SKU. The webcam, however, delivers slightly grainy output. The keyboard design is similar to the bigger Inspirons. Although not of an isolated (chiclet) design, the keys are well-spaced and offer decent tactility. Typing on them was a fairly non-strenuous affair.

The Function keys (F1-F12) are primarily configured to change brightness, volume, toggle Wi-Fi, check battery status etc. This is now implemented better, since the typical Alt-F4 (close application) shortcuts work as well. You can also make Function keys perform as normal if you prefer. Below that is a wide touchpad that's carried over from the previous model. The touch response is accurate. Although it does not have multi-touch gestures, like two-fingered scrolling, the side-scrolling strips work just fine. You can also configure one-handed zoom in/out to the left edge of the pad, which is nifty.

To the sides, we have the typical array of ports. On the left, there is VGA, two USB and a SD/MMC/MS card reader. To the right we have LAN, another USB port, and the headphone/microphone jacks. HDMI from the earlier model has been removed from this one. One noticeable problem was the positioning of the air vents. All of them are placed at the bottom. In most laptops, you'll find at least one to the sides. As a result of this, the bottom part gets a little hotter than usual.

While it's bearable when performing non-intensive tasks, we did realize the heating was a little over the top when running benchmarks on it. However, the paltry 3-cell battery on the earlier model has been replaced with a higher capacity 6-cell one. Still, the design of the laptop avoids it protruding too much, which is nice. The two speakers under the belly emit clear output at a fairly audible volume. Lastly, the Mini 10 came with a cute little one piece adapter (unlike the typical wire-adapter-wire chargers), which is not as messy to carry around.

Other than the little extra heating, we didn't have any other complaints with the design and build of the new Dell Inspiron Mini 10.

Real World Performance

Our review unit came pre-installed with Windows XP SP3. Using XP feels a little dated now that Windows 7 has become common fare, even in netbooks. Thankfully, higher-end SKUs offer you an option of either Windows 7 Starter or Home Basic. Still, XP runs pretty smooth on the newer-generation hardware. That's right, the Atom N450 1.66 GHz processor and 1GB of RAM were good enough to keep it running swifty. Moderate amount of multi-tasking shouldn't be too much for this baby.

We tried HD video playback on it. While 1080p HD videos lagged as expected, 720p videos mostly ran without a hitch (we installed the latest K-lite Codec pack and played them on Media Player Classic). Come to think of it, the HDMI port from the previous model would have been a nice addition in this version, to project those movies onto an LCD TV.

Battery Life

The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 came with a 56 Whr, 6-cell battery. We put it through our first test -- the 720p video drain. Brightness and sound were set to max. Here it delivered an unbelievable run-time of seven hours. That's a great figure, probably the highest I've seen in my time.

Under regular usage, i.e. typing a word document in an online document editor, when connected over Wi-Fi, it again gave us an up-time of roughly seven hours. Note that the brightness level here was a notch or two under maximum. So, for basic office usage (without wireless internet) that number could shoot to Dell's 8-hour claims on their website. That's very good battery life and it clearly shows the improved power optimization in the newer generation Atom CPU.

Price and Verdict

The price of the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 starts from Rs. 15,900 (delivery charges extra) on the Dell India website. This comes with 1GB RAM and 160GB hard drive with XP pre-installed. The pricing is pretty fair. The high-end version, with a higher-resolution (HD) display, 2GB RAM, 320GB hard disk and Windows 7 Home Basic also carries a value for money tag of Rs. 20,000.

Dell has tried hard to perfect the netbook with this one and we have very little to complain about it. The only con that we would point out is the soaring temperatures at the base. But under non-intensive usage, when seated in an air-conditioned room, the heating wasn't that noticeable.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 is a very good netbook to go for. It looks good, is fairly comfortable to use, has great battery life and you have three configurations to choose from. We give it two thumbs up!

Facebook Social Network To Be Banned Life Long in Pakistan

Facebook, which is one of the leading social network is to be banned life long in Pakistan. 70% of the people in Pakistan want the social network to be banned whole among the country Life Long, whereas only 15% of the people supports the prevailing Ban for Facebook which is till31st of this month.

Apple MacBook Pro Winter 2011 (2.2GHz Core i7, 15-inch) Review

The good: Powerful updates to the CPU and GPU; excellent battery life; still the best touch pad and gesture controls of any laptop.
The bad: Upgrades can get expensive; Thunderbolt is an unproven technology with as-yet no compatible products; still no dedicated HDMI, Blu-ray, or other wished-for options.
The bottom line: It's a hefty investment, but the combination of new high-end Intel processor options and AMD graphics makes the 15-inch MacBook Pro an all-around powerhouse, with the new Thunderbolt I/O port as an added bonus.
After a now-customary period of rumors, leaks, and anecdotal evidence, Apple's new generation of MacBook Pro laptops has arrived. And though these new models may look the same as the ones they replace, the changes under the hood are some of the most far-reaching in the history of the MacBook Pro brand.
The 15-inch MacBook Pro moves from Intel's original Core i-series CPUs to the latest second-generation chips, formerly code-named Sandy Bridge. Not only that, you can forget about seeing an Intel Core i5 CPU in your 15-inch (or 17-inch) MacBook Pro--these use high-end quad-core Core i7 chips now. Our step-up $2,199 review unit had a 2.2GHz quad-core i7, with 4GB of RAM and a huge 750GB hard drive (at only 5,400rpm, however).
The biggest surprise is the 15-inch MacBook Pro's graphics processor. Instead of the Nvidia GeForce 330M graphics card previously found in these systems, the GPUs now come from Nvidia's longtime rival AMD. The base 15-inch model has an AMD Radeon HD 6490M, and our review unit had an even faster 6750M. With Intel's improved integrated graphics in the 13-inch models, that means that Nvidia has been completely ousted from the MacBook Pro line.
he 15-inch MacBook Pro specs are: 2.2 GHz quad-core i7, 4GB RAM and 750 GB hard drive. Interestingly, the GPU comes with an AMD graphics processor. The 15-inch model comes with an AMD Radeon HD 6490M (the review model came with a 6750M).
Positive – Apple MacBook Pro Winter comes with powerful new updates to the GPU and CPU and has the finest touch pad and gesture control available on any laptop. It also has a top of the line battery life.
Negative – Some updates are expensive and the Thunderbolt doesn’t have any compatible products and is yet an unproved technology. It also lacks HDMI, Blu-ray and other options.
Bottom line – It’s a big investment. The combination of the Intel powerful processor and AMD sleek graphics makes the MacBook Pro a great powerhouse. The new Thunderbolt I/O port is an additional plus.
Cost - $ 2,199
Review– The new release keeps the well-known single aluminum body which makes the laptop both well-built and flex-free. There is also the big multi-touch click-pad type trackpad which is one of the cornerstones of the MacBook Pro. New gestures are expected to come out with the new version of the OS X.  There has been one addition in the ports and connections for the Thunderbolt. This is Intel’s new powered-port technology to enable high speed data transmission and display. This technology is hypothesized to allow peripherals to transfer data and videos at the rate of 10 Gbps. But at present, there is little idea about the Thunderbolt matched peripherals or when they will be available. It is possible this new technology can end up replacing other ports and connections in the coming years.
The cheapest 15-inch MacBook Pro comes at $1,799. We still have to wait for high in demand features like HDMI, Blu-ray and 3G. The 15-inch MacBook Pro offers a resolution of 1440×900 with two screen updates available. The 1680×1050 resolution costs an extra $100 and the 1680×1050 resolution “antiglare” option costs $150. This is a vast improvement from the 13-inch MacBook in which you cannot avail any anti-glare or increased resolution screen options.
The MacBook Pro comes with an inbuilt 720p webcam. It works with Mac’s new version of FaceTime and you can shift into full-screen mode with ease. You can easily make calls from a MacBook to an iPhone as well. The SD card slot available is SDXC compatible. So you can use higher capacity SD cards with this laptop.
The true strength of the MacBook Pro is its i7 CPU and AMD Radeon 6750 GPU. At present, this laptop is the fastest of its kind offered in the market. The battery life is projected by the company at 7 hours on average. This is higher than the previous year’s model, inclusive of its new hardware.
The MacBook Pro comes with a 1-year part and work warranty but 90 days of phone support. For the 3-year plan, AppleCare costs $349 in total. This is $100 more expensive than the 13-inch MacBook Pro and is a necessary purchase for Apple products. Other support options include an online knowledgebase, customer support via email, video tutorials or through Apple retail stores.
